Ibrahim, more popularly known as Umbayee started his career as a Tabalist, having mastered the instrument through the able hands of celebrated maestros like tha late Shri.Mangeshkar Rao and Mujawir Ali Khan and Abdul Khader Vakil Saheb. He also learned a great deal of Hindustani Music. Returning to his home town of cochin, he joined hands with the late playback singer H.Mehboob who put in more Hindustani 'Raagas' into his singing than Carnatic compositions. Umbayee was already popular by then. He became a tutor to many aspirants of Hindustani Music which also helped him gather a growing generation of fans to popularise Hindustani Music in Kerala. Umbayee's independent concerts as ghazal singer have given him a new identity and popularity which elevated him to a height now recognised by the press, the television and the public, not to mention the All India Radio and Doordarshan. Infact he is a more frequently telecast singer than any other through the Thiruvananthapuram network of Doordarshan and Asianet.
